Declaring a Climate Change Emergency
Producing An Action Plan and Working Together
This includes working with Devon County, Teignbridge District and other Devon councils and their partners as part of the Devon Climate Emergency Response Group.
In response to the latest report from the UN’s intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned that global carbon emissions must reduce by 45% by 2030 and reach ‘net zero’ by 2050, various local authorities and organisations in Devon have declared climate emergencies with the aim of decarbonising Devon.
Cllr Judy Pearce, Leader of South Hams District Council said: “On Friday last I attended the Devon Districts Forum and Devon Local Government Steering Group meetings, collaborative meetings of Leaders and senior officers from all Devon authorities.
“I am pleased to report, a willingness was shown to work together, on the climate change agenda.
“A tactical Group, with representation from 11 organisations, has now been formed. They have drafted the Devon wide Climate Emergency Declaration and are preparing a proposal for how we can develop a Devon-wide carbon plan.”
Following the meeting of South Hams District Council’s Executive this week, South Hams has now agreed to the following activities: to create an action plan, to work with other Devon authorities and agencies, create a member workshop and to continue their drive to reduce their own carbon footprint.
Cllr Pearce added: “I have spoken to the Leader of Plymouth City Council, Tudor Evans, and his Cabinet member for Climate Change, Sue Dunn and I found both a willingness to work together and plenty of common ground on which to do so.
“Our intention is to take an informed, evidence based approach to this problem and do whatever we can in the shortest feasible timeframe to reduce the council’s carbon foot print, working with partners and the public to further this aim in the District.”
Climate Change is recognised as a cross-cutting, strategic issue that impacts on all of the Councils six Corporate Strategy themes and as such it is proposed that the Portfolio sits with the Leader of the Council who takes the Executive lead.
