Dear Members,

I do hope you will be able to join us for the AGM. It should be a lively meeting with our
guest speaker David Hayward speaking on the Winslade Turbine and the process that led
to a judicial review.

Following David's presentation there will be drinks and nibbles and the chance to talk with
various people who have been active on the many different projects, not all of which reach
the general public but which certainly should do. We will have flip charts with various
headings, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) JLP, the Crofts, Bantham, pre-
application discussions, Winslade, South Hams Society (SHS) and so on around the
library manned by people who have been actively involved. So have your say and don't
hold back, but please remember that it must be constructive and if we should have any
council officers, non-aggressive.

There has been a lot of activity in the last few months. We have appointed a PR person,
Cathy Koo, who spends half her life in Malaysia but keeps up to date via the wonderful
technology. Cathy has been involved in various campaigns, including the Keep South
Sands Beautiful, (KSSB) and is on a steep learning curve to get to grips with all the
acronyms and relationships with AONB, Planning Law, JLP, NPPF, NDP.  Do please send
information to Cathy that you think should be publicised.

Last autumn the Society very nearly folded for lack of Committee members. Thanks to a
lot of work by a few, a questionnaire was sent to all SHS members asking them what they
wanted of the Society. The major response was that the Society has never been more
needed and should:

   a) be the overarching focus for resources and information, especially for the communities
fighting so hard to get a workable balance of affordable homes without destroying the
community or surrounding countryside.

   b) make much more use of technology to distribute information and

   c) scrutinise the activities of the District Council and all elected bodies to support the
council in meeting their obligations.

So, we are updating the website and getting active with Facebook. Please help by using
and 'liking' our page. The address is:
500307343482608/ The website will have a directory of 'mentors', and be able to point
people to the appropriate information for their concern or interest. There will be a template
of how to comment on any planning application. So we need volunteers to manage the website
and facebook administrators if we are to embrace the communications required by our members.

We have achieved a lot, but we have not yet succeeded in building a strong and active
committee. The Society can do little without help. Tatiana, our minutes secretary is
leaving due to a job promotion, if we want activities and outings, we need a social
secretary. The list goes on.

We have been asked to be more active in scrutinizing the District Council and other official
bodies' fulfilment of their duties and obligations - but who is going to do this? It seems that
the Society has become exclusively concerned with planning and I think we probably all
know why but it is not the sole purpose of the Society. Perhaps we can recapture the other
aims in time.

As always we will be voting members to the Committee. I am stepping down as Chair but
would be happy to stand as Vice Chair. Unless anyone else comes forward, Ray Long our
treasurer has offered to stand as Acting Chair and Nicki Fox as minutes secretary. We
would welcome other nominations to committee. There has been lots of input by people
not necessarily on the committee, but it does take a dedicated group to hold the whole
thing together, not duplicate information, fill gaps and be forward thinking.

Do please contact any member of the committee if you want information or can help in any
